Ireland’s Six Nations campaign began with a humbling 36-14 defeat to a ruthless French side in Paris, marking a disastrous start to the tournament.
Les Bleus dominated proceedings early, racing to a 22-0 half-time lead thanks to tries from Matthieu Jalibert, Charles Ollivon, and the first of two scores from the electric Louis Bielle-Biarrey.
Returning captain Antoine Dupont pulled the strings for the hosts, whose high-intensity attack exposed a porous Irish defence that missed a total of 38 tackles on the night.
While France looked poised to surpass the 40-point mark, they secured a comfortable bonus-point victory with a late try from Theo Attissogbe, handing Ireland one of their heaviest defeats in recent years.
Although Ireland managed a brief resurgence in the second half with tries from replacements Nick Timoney and Michael Milne, head coach Andy Farrell was left questioning his team’s "fight and intent".
Farrell admitted his side was simply "outplayed" in the physical battles, while captain Caelan Doris conceded they lacked "bite" and allowed France to play too freely.
This result continues a worrying trend for Ireland, who have now lost seven of their last nine games against top-four opposition, and they must urgently regroup to face Italy on 14 February to get their championship back on track.
