Saint Patrick's Weekend Vienna

Saint Patrick's Day: Vienna

St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated every year on March 17th, is one of the most recognised festivals in the world. What began as an Irish tradition has grown into a global celebration of Irish culture, live music and good company.

From Dublin to major cities across Europe, including right here in Vienna, the day brings parades, packed pubs, Irish dancing and plenty of pints - including the famous green beer.

It’s also the perfect excuse to dig into classic Irish dishes and soak up the kind of atmosphere that only St. Patrick’s Day delivers.

Rooted in Irish heritage, St. Patrick’s Day has grown far beyond its origins. Now celebrated in more than 80 countries, it remains one of the biggest days of the year in Ireland - and one of the biggest Irish celebrations worldwide.

In Vienna, you don’t need to travel far to be part of it. At Charlie P’s Irish Pub, St. Patrick’s Day is done the Charlie P’s way.

Irish food specials. Pints of Guinness. Green beer flowing. Live music. A packed house. The kind of atmosphere you expect when Paddy’s Day rolls around.

So, who was Saint Patrick?

The truth? It depends who you ask. 😄

Believe it or not, St. Patrick wasn’t Irish. He was born in Wales. As a teenager, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. Not exactly a warm welcome.

After escaping back to Britain, he trained as a priest and later chose to return to Ireland. This time with a mission - to spread Christianity across the country.

He’s also credited with banishing all the snakes from Ireland. Sounds impressive. Small detail though - there were never any snakes in Ireland to begin with.

Still, he clearly left his mark. He became Ireland’s Patron Saint, and March 17th is the day that carries his name.

The exact year he died? That part is still debated.

And that’s the short version of a story that’s over 1,600 years old.

We’re only here for the celebration. 🍀

Where did the shamrock originate?

According to folklore, St. Patrick used the shamrock - a three-leaf clover - to explain the Christian Holy Trinity.

The word shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg, meaning “little clover.” Over time, it became one of Ireland’s most recognised national symbols.

That’s why wearing a shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day is still part of the tradition today.

Fun Facts

St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t always green.

Originally, the colour linked to St. Patrick was blue. Yes, blue.

These days, wearing green feels mandatory, but historically St. Patrick was associated with a different shade.

So what changed?

Ireland’s nickname, “The Emerald Isle,” played a role. So did the green in the Irish flag. And of course, the shamrock - the symbol linked to St. Patrick and the Holy Trinity.

By the 17th century, people were already wearing green ribbons and shamrocks on March 17th.

Blue didn’t stand a chance.

Saint Patrick's Day Parades

When people think of St. Patrick’s Day - or Paddy’s Day - parades are usually the first thing that come to mind.

Here’s a twist.

The first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade didn’t take place in Ireland at all. It happened in the United States - in Florida - back in 1601.

Ireland may have perfected it, but Florida got there first.

Today, the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades take place in Dublin, Boston, New York, Sydney and London. These aren’t small processions. They’re full-scale city events. Carnivals, really.

They’re major occasions for Irish communities, their families and anyone claiming to be Irish for the day.

It’s about coming together, celebrating the culture and soaking up the atmosphere. Ideally with a pint in hand.

The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the largest in the world. It dates back to 1762 - fourteen years before the Declaration of Independence.

The first parade was organised by Irish immigrants and British Army soldiers stationed in the American colonies who wanted to celebrate their heritage.

What began as a small gathering has grown into an annual tradition that now draws millions of spectators and participants every year.

St. Patrick's Celebrations in Vienna

In Vienna, St. Patrick’s Day is marked with a city parade that takes place on Saturday 14 March 2026.

The parade begins at Schottenstift / Freyung in the first district, with participants gathering before the 12:15 start.

From there, it moves through the city centre via Herrengasse, Michaelerplatz, Schauflergasse, Ballhausplatz and Löwelstraße, before finishing at Josef-Meinrad-Platz by the Burgtheater.

It’s a strong mix of Irish tradition and Vienna’s historic setting. Bagpipes through the first district. A sea of green against some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

A key part of the Vienna St. Patrick’s Day parade is the Vienna Gaels GAA club, Austria’s leading Gaelic games club. Members represent traditional Irish sports, bringing an authentic edge to the day’s celebrations.

Their presence reflects the strength of the Irish community in Vienna and its commitment to keeping Irish culture active and visible.

Adding to the atmosphere, the Shamrock Dance Company Vienna delivers Irish dance performances along the route. Founded in 1999, the group has played a major role in introducing traditional Irish dance to audiences across Austria.

The parade also features the Vienna Pipes and Drums, a Scottish bagpipe band based in Vienna. Their sound carries through the first district, adding a strong Celtic presence to the day.

Beyond the parade, several Vienna landmarks take part in the global “greening” initiative for St. Patrick’s Day. The Riesenrad and the Burgtheater are often lit in green, marking the occasion and adding another layer to the celebrations across the city.

And once a year, Green Beer takes over the taps.

Guinness still leads the charge, as expected. Right behind it is Madra Rua, our Irish-style Red Ale and Charlie P’s own take on a classic

Music on St. Patrick's Day at Charlie P's

Now all good parties need good music...and there’s plenty of that coming from Ireland!

During the day, we keep it traditional. Expect plenty of Christy Moore, Luke Kelly, Planxty and The Chieftains playing through the pub.

As the day rolls on, our DJs take over with U2, The Cranberries, Thin Lizzy, The Pogues, Sinéad O’Connor, Hozier and more.

Not strictly Irish, but always guaranteed to fire up a Paddy’s Day crowd - Dropkick Murphys and House of Pain.

The song of the day? “Whiskey in the Jar.” You’ll likely hear it more than once.

Our go-to version is The Pogues with The Dubliners. That combo never fails.

That said, Metallica’s version still gets a strong reaction too.

Every year in Vienna, you can experience St. Patrick’s Day traditions right here at Charlie P’s - with great food, drinks and a big party atmosphere.

Irishness, Charlie P’s style.

A Celebration of Green

Celebrating in Green

On St. Patrick’s Day, wearing green is a simple way of joining in, but it also means something more. Green has long been associated with Ireland - its landscape, its identity, and symbols like the shamrock that are tied closely to Irish tradition. That is why it feels like such a natural part of the day.

Once the green comes out, the mood shifts. It gives the celebration a shared look and helps create that sense of occasion. You do not have to be Irish to take part. It is a colour that invites people in and makes the day feel social, lively, and connected.

At Charlie P’s, that is exactly what St. Patrick’s Day is about - a packed pub, a great crowd, Irish food and drink, and the kind of atmosphere that brings people together.

Green Beer
